Sightings Report January 2010
The elephants are being spotted along the waters edge far more regularly now than in previous months. This is due to the current weather being a bit warmer.
Other animals that have been seen more frequently than usual include Black-Backed Jackal, waterbuck and Kudu.
Both black and white rhinos have been scarce. Most have moved into the west of the reserve, close to the Swazi border. The white rhinos in particular enjoy this area as it contains plenty of good grass for grazing. The black rhinos are hiding in the thicket areas to escape the heat. They tend to be far more nocturnal during the hotter months. This thicket is quite extensive and now, after the rains, it becomes extremely dense and lush.
By now most of the animal mothers have had their babies. There are a lot of tiny warthogs, impalas, wildebeest, nyala, giraffe and kudu to be seen.
It is very interesting to see just how quickly the little ones actually grow!
This is the best time of the year to observe birds of prey. As many as 44 species have been recorded in the area to date. Many of these can be spotted soaring from around the lodge and chalets. Many others can be seen hunting the huge flocks of Quelias (Small finch-like birds) as they traverse the shores of the lake.
All in all this is still a good time for game viewing and bird watching.
